Wajib Qurbani (also known as Udhiyah) is the obligatory sacrifice that must be performed during the days of Eid al-Adha — the 10th, 11th, or 12th of Dhul Hijjah — by every sane, adult Muslim who possesses wealth above the nisab threshold. According to the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence, it is wajib (obligatory), and neglecting it without valid reason is a sin.
Who is Wajib Qurbani Obligatory Upon?
Wajib Qurbani is required for every Muslim who meets all of the following conditions:
- Muslim
- Sane and adult (reached the age of maturity)
- Free (not enslaved)
- Possesses wealth above the nisab threshold (equivalent to 80.18 grams of gold)
- Resident (not a traveler/musafir)
How is the Nisab Threshold Calculated?
On the morning of Eid al-Adha, after deducting basic needs and debts, if a person possesses savings, cash, or assets equivalent to or greater than 80.18 grams of gold, they are obligated to offer Qurbani. This threshold must be recalculated each year based on current gold prices.
Which Animals Are Valid for Wajib Qurbani?
- Sheep/Goat: At least 1 year old, counts for 1 person
- Cattle/Buffalo: At least 2 years old, shared by up to 7 people
- Camel: At least 5 years old, shared by up to 7 people
The animal must be healthy and free from major defects. Blind, lame, severely weak, or animals missing ears/tail are not valid.
How Should the Meat Be Distributed?
According to the Hanafi school, the meat is divided into thirds: one third for personal consumption, one third for relatives and neighbors, and one third for those in need. Donating the entire portion is also permissible and highly rewarding.
