The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days. (Bukhari)
The ten days he referred to are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah — the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. These days include Arafah, Eid al-Adha, and the days of Qurbani. Why Are These Days So Special?
Allah swore by these days in the Quran: By the dawn, and by the ten nights. (Al-Fajr, 89:1-2). Three great acts of worship converge during these days: Hajj, the Fast of Arafah, and Qurbani.
The Day of Arafah — 9th of Dhul Hijjah
The ninth of Dhul Hijjah is the Day of Arafah — the holiest day of the Islamic year. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that fasting on this day expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year. For those not on Hajj, fasting on Arafah is one of the greatest acts of worship available to them.
The Day of Eid — 10th of Dhul Hijjah
The tenth of Dhul Hijjah is Eid al-Adha — the Day of Sacrifice. The Prophet (peace be upon him) described it as the greatest day in the sight of Allah. It is on this day that Qurbani becomes obligatory for those who meet the nisab threshold, and the sacrifice may begin after the Eid prayer.
Recommended Acts During the First 10 Days
- Increase dhikr: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illAllah, Allahu Akbar
- Fast the first nine days, especially the Day of Arafah
- Offer Qurbani or arrange for it to be offered on your behalf
- Give generously in charity
- Read and reflect upon the Quran
- Make sincere repentance and dua
- Refrain from cutting hair or nails if you are offering a Qurbani
