One of the most heartfelt questions in Islam: can a Qurbani be offered for someone who has passed away? Learn the ruling, the reward, and how to do it through a trusted platform.
One of the most heartfelt questions in Islam is whether a Qurbani can be offered for someone who has passed away. According to the majority of Islamic scholars, the answer is a clear yes — and the reward reaches the deceased, insha'Allah. This act is one of the most profound expressions of love a believer can offer to those who have departed.
The Islamic Ruling
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) offered Qurbani on behalf of those in his ummah who lacked the means. Imam al-Nawawi and other classical scholars confirm that offering sadaqah on behalf of the deceased is valid and the reward reaches them. The Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools all permit Qurbani for the deceased without restriction.
Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) reportedly offered a Qurbani on behalf of the Prophet (peace be upon him) each year after his passing, saying that the Prophet had instructed him to do so. This narration is widely cited by scholars as evidence for this blessed practice.
Who Can You Offer It For?
- A deceased parent, grandparent, or any Muslim ancestor
- A spouse or child who has passed away
- Any deceased Muslim relative, friend, or neighbor
- The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself, or the entire Muslim ummah
Important: Your Own Wajib Comes First
If Wajib Qurbani is obligatory upon you, your personal obligation must be fulfilled first. A Qurbani on behalf of the deceased is offered in addition to — not as a replacement for — your own Eid sacrifice.
How to Specify Your Intention
When placing your order through Qurban.us, mention the deceased person's name in the order notes along with your intention. For example: Nafl Qurbani on behalf of [Name] — may Allah have mercy on them.
Sadaqah Jariyah That Never Ends
Every morsel of meat distributed from a Qurbani offered on behalf of a deceased person is a sadaqah jariyah — an ongoing charity that continues to be written in their record of good deeds. There is no more beautiful gift you can send to those you love who have departed.
