Nazar (vow) Qurbani is the sacrifice a Muslim performs to fulfill a promise made to Allah in exchange for a specific wish or condition being met. Known as "nazr" in Islamic jurisprudence, this type of sacrifice becomes obligatory (fard) once the stated condition is fulfilled.
When Does Nazar Qurbani Become Obligatory?
If a Muslim says "If I recover from this illness, I will sacrifice an animal for Allah" or "If this matter is resolved, I will offer a Qurbani" — and that condition is fulfilled — then performing the sacrifice becomes fard (obligatory) upon that person. A vow made verbally carries stronger obligation than one made purely in the heart.

What If Someone Cannot Fulfill Their Vow?
A person who is unable to fulfill their Nazar Qurbani during their lifetime may leave a will requesting heirs to do so. If a will is left, the heirs must fulfill it. If no will is made, it is not obligatory for heirs — though doing so voluntarily as a charity is highly encouraged.
Difference Between Nazar and Wajib (Udhiyah) Qurbani
Wajib Qurbani (Eid sacrifice) is obligatory for every Muslim who possesses the nisab amount — it applies broadly. Nazar Qurbani, by contrast, applies only to the specific person who made the vow, and only when their stated condition has been met.
